Minister Ndebele to address Rea Vaya taxi industry handover

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele will deliver the keynote address at a function to commemorate the handover to taxi industry shareholders of the Rea Vaya phase 1A bus operating company and scrapping of their vehicles.

Details of the event are as follows:
Date: Monday, 7 February 2011
Time: 9h30 for 10h00
Venue: 1 Cuming & Stokwell Avenue, Nancefield, Industria, Johannesburg

Minister Ndebele will be joined by various dignitaries including Gauteng Mec for Roads and Transport Mr Ismail Vadi, City of Joburg Executive Mayor Mr Amos Masondo, Transport MMC Ms Rehana Moosajee, senior transport officials as well as representatives from the taxi industry.

Due to the fact that 66.7% of shareholders have relinquished their operating licences, the Rea Vaya Bus Operating Company is now majority owned and managed by former taxi operators. The vast majority of the shareholders raised their equity from scrapping their vehicles, and as a result over 350 old and unsafe taxis will be taken off the road. Rea Vaya BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) seeks to improve the legacy of poor public transport infrastructure and improve the quality of lives of the residents of Johannesburg.

All media are invited to attend. Attendance must be confirmed with Mthunzikazi Mbungwana @ 012 309 3960 or email: Mbungwam@dot.gov.za
