Transport Minister Mr Sibusiso Ndebele is expected to join the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), to deliver a keynote address at the official launch of the Human Factor Management Standard (SANS 3000-4).
The regulator strongly believes that healthy, well trained, physically and mentally sound railway employees contribute to a safer railway environment.
Details are as follows:
Date: Friday, 27 May 2011
Time: 8h00 for 8h30 (working breakfast)
Venue: Premier Hotel OR Tambo, 73 Gladiator Street, Kempton Park
Media are invited to capture the launch proceedings, which will consist of a working breakfast with addresses from key stakeholders. Thereafter, one on one interviews with ministry and RSR officials may be conducted, by prior arrangement.
The Railway Safety Regulator, in line with its mandate, will unveil the standard, which is critical for railway safety, as it sets the minimum requirements needed to be implemented by railway operators for all employees undertaking safety-related work.
The Human Factor Management Standard promotes healthy lifestyles amongst railway workers and focuses on the management of human factors, including the perceptual, physical and mental capabilities of people.
This includes issues such as worker fatigue, substance abuse and medical surveillance. The standard also encompasses the influence of equipment and system design on human performance, training and the organisational characteristics that influence safety-related behaviour at work.
The standard was developed by the RSR and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), which owns the document. The launch will be attended by transport and railway executives, as well as the operational managers who will be dealing with these issues at the coalface.
