Minister Motshekga in annual assessment results blitz

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is engaged in school visits across the country to monitor how schools are utilising information gathered from the outcomes of the Annual National Assessment (ANA).

In February 2011, more than six million primary school learners from Grade 1-6 sat for the first ANA tests in languages (home language and first additional language and mathematics. The objective of the ANA is to establish a national benchmark by which the Department of Basic Education will measure levels of literacy and numeracy in primary schools.

The results, released in April 2011 were shared with parents and the public and showed several weaknesses in numeracy and literacy at primary school level, that need urgent intervention.

The Minister will tomorrow visit Kanana Primary, Mayibuye Primary and Phomolong Primary Schools in Tembisa.

The Minister will also meet with all principals of primary schools in Ekurhuleni East.
