Ms Edna Molewa, the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, will on Sunday, 9 October 2011 address the South African Mayors Conference on climate change at Emperors Palace in Ekurhuleni municipality.
The conference will launch the Local Government Programme of COP17 and is a platform for municipalities to share knowledge on climate change and build capacity ahead of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that will be held in Durban from 28 November until 9 December.
As Head of the South African Delegation for COP17, Ms Edna Molewa is entrusted with the responsibility of leading the South African delegation in pursuing the country’s interest at the UNFCCC, COP 17/CMP 7 negotiations.
278 municipalities are expected to convene in Ekurhuleni for the conference which ends on 11 October.
