Minister Bathabile Dlamini will on Thursday meet with all MECs for Social Development in East London, the Eastern Cape province, to discuss various issues. These include the protection of older persons from abuse, loan sharks and social security.
There have been concerns by the different stakeholders including the South African Older Persons Forum about the need to protect senior citizens in this regard. Other issues to be discussed by Minister and MEC's (MINMEC) are plans to increase Child and Youth Care Workers with the view to provide support services to child-headed households and vulnerable children.
MINMEC will also deliberate about the social security implications for Foster Care Grant reviews. There have also been complaints from members of the public in respect of this matter. The meeting will also discuss the Programme of Action for government’s anti-substance abuse campaign, which was drafted following the second Biennial Substance Abuse summit that was held in March this year.
In addition to the formal programme, MINMEC will also conduct community outreach programme focusing on development projects.
