Minister Mapisa-Nqakula will officially hand over the Siyabonga Senior Secondary School as a symbolic gesture of the positive contribution that the department - through the effective use of offender labour services - has done for the community.
The school is located a few kilometres away from the foot of the Hogsback Mountains. For a while, it had been bearing a gloomy outlook characterised by unpainted walls, broken ceilings, doors, fences, windows, roofs and flooring, cracked walls, hanging gates and gutters.
Through the provision of labour services by about 60 offenders with various skills, the school’s freshly painted two classroom blocks and the staff room now boast a refreshing outlook.
The renovations to 10 classrooms and three administration buildings included fixing of the broken ceilings and gutters, electrical repairs, installation of a fence with razor wire, plastering of the wall cracks, installation of window panes, construction of entrance gate and the fixing of the broken floors.
Through the renovations that were rendered by offenders, the school saved huge amounts of money in labour costs.
Ms Mapisa-Nqakula will therefore address parents, pupils, teachers, community and invited guests on the importance and effective use of offender labour as a way for them to plough back to their communities and as a step towards their social reintegration.
The Department of Correctional Services firmly believes that the effective use of offender labour services can contribute enormously to their own personal growth and community development.
