The Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Malusi Gigaba, will on Thursday (20 September 2012) host a joint media briefing with the National Association of the Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), to announce the establishment of the State Owned Companies’ (SOC) Automotive Industry Competitiveness Forum.
The aim of the Forum is to ensure that infrastructure capacity and service delivery enhance the competitiveness of the industry; and to enable increased investment in both infrastructure and in the cluster as a whole.
The announcement will follow Minister Gigaba’s earlier meeting with the National Association of the Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), who have a vested interest in the development of the Transnet /Portnet capacity and efficiency improvements.
The Government has prioritised the automotive sector as one of the key sectors in the economy that will give South Africa a competitive advantage over their global counterparts as outlined in the Industrial Policy Action Plan through the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP). The APDP is a flagship programme that provides incentives to attract original equipment manufacturers to invest in South Africa and to encourage the development of manufacturing capabilities throughout the automotive supply chain.
The media briefing will be addressed by Minister Gigaba and NAAMSA CEOs. The details are as follows:
