The Western Cape Government Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will host the Western Cape Govan Mbeki Awards at the Cape Sun, Strand Street, Cape Town on 7 May 2012.
Govan Mbeki committed himself to the liberation of all people in South Africa during the struggle for freedom. Freedom allows for dignity, and it is in the tradition of ensuring the dignity of all people that the Human Settlements Department provides quality housing opportunities for those who need them most.
There is a dire need for housing opportunities in the Western Cape and the demand far outstrips the supply. The current backlog of around 500 000 housing opportunities will only be cleared in around 32 years, given the current resources. There is continued conflict among communities as they vie for the limited housing opportunities, and as a result, the public focus is often on the massive need and the social problems surrounding housing delivery.
The awards shift the focus and celebrate success, and honour all that is being done right in human settlements delivery. They will showcase the excellent and hard work done by many partners who work tirelessly and better together to make successful projects. They will promote best practices and foster healthy competition among those service providers who go the extra mile in the province, working better together to deliver quality services to all people.
It takes no less than 11 different funding grants to be accessed to put a single house on the ground. Close cooperation of all levels of government, service providers, stakeholders and community groups is needed to co-ordinate these grants, and it’s only through always striving to work better together, that the department is able to deliver with excellence.
