Minister Lulu Xingwana visits India

Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities has accepted an invitation to deliver a keynote address at the 5th International Women's Conference in Bangalore, India.

Minister Xingwana will address the conference on the theme: “Empowering women through technology”. The Minister’s speech is expected to reflect on the need to empower women in the fields of technology to enable them to contribute to the development of the world.

Last year, the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, launched the Techno-Girl Project which seeks to change the face of the South African market where there is lack of significant representation of women in the professional and scientific professions. The project, in partnership with the Department of Education and UNICEF, encourages girl children to pursue fields in Science, Maths, Engineering and Technology where women have historically been under-represented.

The department believes that promoting access to educational opportunities and skills development for women is key to improving the socio-economic conditions of women and society in the long-term. Among other things, the Minister is likely to share the Techno-Girl experience with the audience.

The conference takes place from 3 to 5 February 2012.
