The Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana and the Premier of Limpopo, Mr. Cassel Mathale, will host the National Children’s Day on Saturday, 3 November 2012 in Malebitsa Village, Marble Hall (Ephraim Mogale Municipality) in Limpopo.
Children from all over the country will converge at Malebitsa Sports Ground to participate in various sporting activities, including indigenous games. Through these activities, the department seeks to promote the spirit of the Olympics and Paralympics. Children from different provinces will be participating in various sporting codes and professional coaches will be on hand to identify future stars.
The purpose of this year’s National Children’s Day is to identify children’s talent and to nurture it so that the nation can have a large pool of talented sports stars. Professional coaches have been invited to come and help identify potential and to spot talent. Children with potential will then be followed to their places of origin and ensure that support is provided to them in line with their abilities.
The department is confident that with the support of the National Department of Sports and Recreation and the provincial Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, this year’s National Children’s Day will be remembered as a moment that produced future Olympic stars of South Africa.
The theme for National Children’s Day 2012 is “Leisure and Recreation, My Right”. The department seeks to promote the right to play, to create awareness on children’s rights and responsibilities, and to advocate for the participation of children, especially those from rural areas, in sporting activities. The focus is on children celebrating their childhood by learning through play.
National Children’s Day takes place every year during the 1st week of November. It is a platform for the nation to reflect on the situation facing our nation’s children. As the country commemorates National Children’s Day, violence against children, and in particular girl children and children with disabilities, continues to be a matter of grave concern. The department continues to work with all stakeholders to address this scourge.
Recently, the department launched the Access to Education for All Children campaign with more focus on children with disabilities and children prevented by circumstances to attend schools.
