Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, and Minister of Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, will on Monday host a press conference about child safety on the province's roads this holiday season. They will draw attention to the high numbers of children that are killed and injured on Western Cape roads.
The Ministers will be joined by Professor Sebastian van As, the President of national NGO Childsafe and the head of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, who, after an introduction to the issue by the Health Minister, will do a presentation on the dangers faced by children on the roads, and the shocking numbers of children treated as a result of unsafe travel.
Thereafter Minister Carlisle will go through the current legislation and regulations governing child seats and seat belts and announce stricter enforcement over the festive season. He will then explain how he plans, over the longer term, to introduce international best practice to the Province.
Members of the media are invited to attend.
