The Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Gugile Nkwinti will be visiting the Goedgedacht Trust. In March this year, the Minister made commitments to the trust and on Saturday, in line with his commitments he will hand over vehicles to benefit the youth that are assisted by the trust and he will also hand over the Middlespos Farm which will be utilised by the qualifying beneficiaries in support of the work of the trust.
The Goedgedacht Trust runs a rural development centre, from a farm called Goedgedacht which is 87km North of Cape Town on the slopes of a small mountain range called the Kasteelberg. This beautiful 171ha Cape Dutch Farm established in 1704 was donated to the Goedgedacht Trust and now offers itself as a resource to the surrounding Swartland and West Coast regions for community development initiatives aimed at transforming the lives of rural poor communities. Goedgedacht literally means ‘good thinking’ or ‘well thought through” ’ and the farm has become a place where good thoughts are put into action.

The Trust is concerned with the issue of poverty as it affects the lives of the rural poor. It is particularly interested in the needs and aspirations of children and youth, new farmers, farm worker communities and people living in rural villages. A major aim is to set up development models which will build the capacity of rural people and youth in particular to break out of the cycles of generational poverty that have trapped their families, and in doing so provide the next generation of youngsters from the surrounding rural communities with hope, confidence and ‘decent’ work.
In the past 13 years Goedgedacht Trust has, worked to develop a holistic, long-term and effective model of intervention programme called the Rural Path out of Poverty (POP) Programme for vulnerable rural children and youth (particularly those who live on farms).
The programme aims to free children and youth from the acute generational poverty in which their families have been trapped. It has succeeded during the past 13 years in creating a safe space where rural voices can be heard, dreams could be realised and human dignity could be restored to rural children and young people.
