Minister Gugile Nkwinti launches simile broilers in Uitenhage

The Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Gugile Nkwinti cordially invite members of the media to the official launch of the Simile Farmers Group project in Uitenhage on Friday, 20 May 2011 in Eastern Cape.

The project has six beneficiaries comprising one female and five males. There are 22 permanent employees on the farm, while during “harvest time” they employ 20 to 40 casual workers. The beneficiaries have acquired skills revolving around growing broilers from their tender age until they are ready for market. Staff have also undergone training on bookkeeping, general Management and financial management. Their strategic partner Sovereign Foods plays a critical role in transferring skills to them.

The idea of the project started in 2000 and Accurate Farm which measures 28.69 hectares in extent in Uitenhage was ultimately acquired through the then Department of Rural Development and Land Reform’s Land Redistribution for Agricultural Development (LRAD) programme at a cost of R2, 58 million. The multi-million rand project is for intensive broiler production. The farm has nine chicken houses (tunnels) spread over a 20 250 square meter radius. Each tunnel is 150 by 50 square meters in size.
