Minister Gugile Nkwinti launches R70 million rural infrastructure projects at Umsinga, 8 Nov

Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Gugile Nkwinti will on 8 November 2014, launch three rural infrastructure projects worth an estimated R70-million at uMsinga in KwaZulu-Natal.

The launch will include the sod turning at the site of the 170-metre Mashunka and Ngubo Bridge. The bridge will improve access to communities in the surrounding Msinga. The residents of Mashunka have to cross the Tugela River to access the clinic. When the river is flooded, the only access to the clinic is through Tugela Ferry which is approximately 30km by road. Most of the people wanting to go to the clinic are normally in a weak state and find it difficult to walk up the steep approaches to the pedestrian bridge.

The provision of the bridge will be of great social benefit to the community of Mashunka. The bridge which will cost an estimated R45 million, which is the result of a partnership between the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) and the Department of Transport.

Minister Nkwinti who is to be accompanied by a delegation of senior provincial politicians led by Premier Senzo Mchunu, will also visit the Tugela Ferry Irrigation Scheme a project which aims to assist small-holder farmers and create job opportunities for the community. The event will conclude with the hand-over of the Msinga animal handling facility (animal sale yard) where the branding of cattle and goats will take place.
