Minister Gugile Nkwinti hands over farm at Waterford

The Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Gugile Nkwinti cordially invite members of the media to the handing over of the Wayside Farm in Waterford on Thursday, 31 March 2011, from 10h00 – 13h00.

The beneficiaries of the project were dispossessed of their land in the past through apartheid legislation. Unfortunately for them they did not meet the deadline for submission of their land claims on or before the 31 December 1998. However, the Department was able to acquire land for them through the Proactive Land Acquisition Strategy (PLAS) to re-dress theinjustice done to them in the past. There are 19 beneficiaries in this project composed of two females and 17 males. The group is a mixture of relatively elderly, middle age and the youngest of them all having been born on the 30 July 1969.

Some of the beneficiaries are small stock farmers while others are working in the Uitenhage area. Some of the older members of the group wish to move back to the district to be closer to other relatives and intend to transfer their skills and experience to the younger members of the group.
