Minister Grant kicks off 2012 teacher training programme

This morning, Western Cape Education Minister Donald Grant will be addressing educators at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute where educators will receive training in mathematics and the roles and functions of Head of Departments.

As indicated in our planning calendar for the 2012 school year, the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute have scheduled for a number of training programmes and workshops for educators this year.

In the next three weeks , educators will receive training in Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase mathematics, which will focus specifically on content knowledge and methodology. Educators will be given the opportunity to improve their skills in various areas such as multiplication, addition, subtractions, measurement and geometric patterns. The aim is not only to improve their knowledge but to also improve the quality of teaching practice in the classroom.

Given the latest numeracy and mathematics test results, released two weeks ago, it is important that our educators improve on these skills in the foundation and intermediate phases.

Tomorrow, the CTLI will also begin a two week Head of Department Programme. 50 Heads of Departments from around the province will take part in this programme, which will look closely at the various roles, functions and responsibilities Heads of Departments have such as developing an understanding of their legal responsibilities and curriculum imperatives and needs, how to assess and utilize relevant institutional data, and to develop the ability to implement a Multi-Level Subject Program across a phase. The HOD’s will also receive training on how to ‘cope’ in challenging times.
