Minister Grant to announce National Senior Certificate exam details and to visit matric candidates

Tomorrow, Minister Donald Grant will be visiting Sizimisele Secondary School and Matthew Goniwe School in Khayelitsha to wish their matriculants good luck for the upcoming examinations.

He will also be announcing the final candidate numbers for this year’s National Senior Certificate (NSC), the number of markers appointed, papers to be written and the dates of the marking period.

Sizimisele Secondary is one of the province’s 30 underperforming schools. The Minister will be visiting the school to encourage the learners ahead of their exams. The school has a target pass rate of 69% this year. The school has received a number of interventions this year to support them in achieving this target which includes telematics programmes, tutoring programmes and after-school and weekend tuition.

Matthew Goniwe HS used to be classified as underperforming, achieving a 48.7% pass rate in 2008, and a 45.5% pass rate in 2009.

However, through teamwork, dedication and a strong management team, the school surpassed all expectations in 2010, achieving 86.9% pass rate. In 2011 they achieved a 90% pass rate.

This is a wonderful example of how a school can turn its circumstance around.

All media are invited to join the Minister on his visits.
