Minister of Energy Ms Dipuo Peters participates in the Forum of Energy Ministers of Africa in Egypt

Minister of Energy Ms Dipuo Peters will today 2 June 2010 be participating in the Forum of Energy Ministers of Africa in Egypt.

The Forum of African Ministers was formed due to challenges of scaling up energy access to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It provides a platform for political leadership to provide policy direction in the energy sector, for collaboration and the exchange of experiences, and the advocacy in the provision, access, use and management of energy resources for sustainable environmental, social and economic development.

The main objective of this forum is to raise the profile of the energy sector in national and regional planning to reflect its central role in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. It also develops a coherent energy strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa, including re-strategising in order to increase modern energy supply access.

The forum aims to promote a common approach expressed through specific, national and regional projects of benefits to Sub-Saharan African countries.

The minister is expected to use the platform to gather the concerns, aspirations and the challenges facing other African Energy Ministers in their respective countries in Africa. The minister may use this information to champion African Energy issues in other forums such as the G8 Energy Minister Meeting, Multilateral meetings and donor forums.

The Acting Minister of Energy during this period is Minister Geoff Doidge.
