The Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters, in conjunction with Sasol, Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality and the Maluti A Phofung local municipality, will on 12 January 2012, conduct the Integrated Energy Centre (IeC) Sod Turning ceremony in Makwane village, (QwaQwa), Free State province.
An Integrated Energy Centre (IeC) is a one-stop energy shop owned and operated by the community cooperative and organised as a community project. It provides energy solutions to communities, access to affordable safe & sustainable energy services, information and awareness on how to handle and utilise energy services e.g. Paraffin, LPG etc. and small, medium and micro-enterprise (SMME) development through partnerships with key stakeholders, such as National Development Agency (NDA), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), etc.
The objectives of the IeC programme are to provide access to safe and affordable energy resources to poor households; provide information regarding the safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable use of energy sources and available energy options such as renewable and non-grid energy, etc.; influence policy in both the public and private sectors regarding energy provision; and put into effect a very strong social responsibility aimed at poverty alleviation, job creation and capacity building.
