Minister Edna Molewa to visit Carolina in Mpumalanga

Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Mrs. Edna Molewa will on Friday 9 March 2012 visit the town of Carolina in the Mpumalanga Province to receive a progress report and to give impetus to efforts being undertaken to resolve the water contamination issue that has resulted in the quality of drinking water being compromised.

Investigations conducted by the Department of Water Affairs together with the Inkomati Catchment Management Agency confirmed that the Boesmanspruit was contaminated due to seepage and run-off possibly emanating from mining activities (active and abandoned) in the river basin.

Minister will also visit the waste water treatment works and the site of the pollution (the dam) from which the towns municipalities draws water for purification for domestic consumption. Department officials have been assisting with the provision of water tankers to supply residence with safe drinking water while engineers and experts are addressing the water purification challenge.

Minister Molewa will also hold a media briefing in Carolina.
