Incoming Chairperson of the African Union and Minister Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will on Friday 21 September depart for New York ahead of the scheduled 67th Session of the UN General Assembly which officially opens on 25 September 2012.
Minister Dlamini Zuma will attend this year’s General Assembly Session against the background of her election to the post of Chairperson of the African Union Commission which will require her attendance of the UNGA sessions on behalf of the African Union Commission.
This year’s General Assembly Session is expected to consider at a high-level the critical issue of “the rule of law at the national and international levels” based on UN Secretary-General Ban ki Moon’s report –“Delivering Justice: programme of action to strengthen the rule of law at the national and international levels”.
In addition to Heads of States and Government expected to address the Assembly, the President of the International Court of Justice, the President of the UN Security Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Administrator of the UNDP, The Executive Director of the UN office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Chairperson of the International Law Commission have also been invited to address the session.
Minister and Chairperson of the AU Commission, Dr Dlamini Zuma will in addition to attending the General Assembly hold a number of bilateral discussions with country representatives who have made requests for such meetings. Details will be released once the programme has been finalised and confirmed.
Minister Dlamini Zuma is expected to return to South Africa on 28 September 2012 ahead of a series of events planned nationally to bid her farewell as she makes final preparations to travel to Addis Ababa for the hand-over ceremony planned for 15 October 2012.
