Minister Dlamini Zuma to consult with Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) on proposals for a new migration policy

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will on Thursday, 25 March interact with members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions central executive committee on proposals for a new migration policy at the Orion Safari Lodge in Rustenburg, North West province.

The meeting with COSATU central executive committee takes place against the background of the approval granted by cabinet for the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma to develop a new migration policy.

Critical is the need for the new migration policy to allow government to distinguish between and to separate economic migrants from asylum seekers which until now has created lock-jams in processing such applications by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In this regard, the meeting with COSATU central executive committee members is part of a broader process of consultation which will witness Minister Dlamini Zuma embarking on a roadshow with various stakeholders in the country with a view to arriving at a consensus about the basic tenets of such a new migration policy.

Once the process of consultation is completed, Minister Dlamini Zuma will present the proposals to both the cabinet and parliament for approval and implementation
