Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, will on Monday unveil two studies which highlight the impact that the global economic recession had on children and families.
The studies are entitled: The Impact of the International Financial Crisis on Child Poverty in South Africa; and Vulnerability of Children and Poor Families to the Economic Recession of 2008 – 2009.
The reports were conducted by the United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Financial and Fiscal Commission (FFC) in collaboration with the Department of Social Development.
Amongst other issues, the studies revealthe impact of the world economic crisis on child poverty in South Africa and the effectiveness of state support systems during the times of need.
The reports also assess whether policies put in place to deal with child poverty (such as the child support grant) have the desired effect in mitigating child poverty.
The event will be attended by representatives from UNICEF, FFC, government and civil society who will make presentations about the findings of the reports.
There will also be experts and panelists who will interact with invited guests from on the contents of the reports and the presentations.
Most importantly, the reports will kick-start a debate on: what are the plans of the Department of Social Development in the light of these findings?
