Minister Dlamini to meet with veteran social workers and to inaugurate new council

As part of the broader strategy to recruit and retain social service professionals to address the growing demand for developmental services, the Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini will meet with veteran social workers and institutions of higher learning that produce social workers and other social service professionals. The meeting will also be attended by non-governmental organisations that employ social workers.

The purpose of this dialogue is to find creative solutions to address the shortage of social workers and other social service professionals in the social development sector. In addition the meeting will explore how retired social workers can still continue to play an important role in the profession by mentoring young social work graduates.

“The meeting will also look at the how the we can strengthen the existing partnership with institutions of higher learning through the bursary scheme to produce the required number of social work graduates that have been thoroughly trained to deal with real issues confronting communities throughout South Africa”, said Minister Dlamini.

Later in the evening, Minister Dlamini will deliver a keynote address during the inauguration of the new members of the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) and the Professional Board for Social Work. The details are as follows:
