Minister Dlamini to launch a social work skills exchange programme

Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini will deliver a keynote address at the Launch of the Social Work Exchange Programme between Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) and a skills development agency from the United Kingdom called Skills for Care.

This Social Work Exchange Programme is a joint research project involving research and exchange of social workers in England and South Africa through the two skills development agencies.

Among others, findings from this programme will inform skills development strategies both in the workplace and educational institutions within each country. Professionals from England arrived in South Africa on the 29th January 2011 to pair with eight selected social work professionals from South Africa to start their local research. The South African social work professionals will visit the UK for two weeks in March 2011.

Social work remains a scarce skill in South Africa and we have in the recent past been experiencing skills flight from the country to other countries who offer lucrative salary packages. The Minister will highlight the importance of this programme and the impact it will have in helping the profession respond to the many social problems facing our country.
