Minister Dlamini encourages social workers to fight social ills

Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini will speak to social workers about how they can intensify their work to help the poor, especially child-headed households, older persons and people with disabilities.

Social work professionals are very scarce in South Africa while the demand for social work services is high. The many challenges that these professionals have to deal with in communities mostly affect the poor and vulnerable, including children, older persons and people with disabilities.

In addition, they also have to deal with issues of gender-based violence as well as substance abuse.

The Minister will highlight the importance of social workers upholding their professional ethics and code of conduct, especially by ensuring that places of safety that house children, older persons and people with disabilities – operate in line with the norms and standards set by government.

She will be addressing the Conference of the National Association of Social Workers. The conference will discuss the under the theme: “Repositioning Social Services Professions for a Developmental State”.
