Minister Dlamini to address the South African Women's HIV Prevention Summit

Department of Social Development Minister, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, will on Wednesday, 31 August 2011, speak at the second Women’s HIV Prevention Summit to be held at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.

The major objective of this summit is to engage high-level policy makers, researchers and advocates discussing the HIV prevention agenda for women in South Africa. This include sharing knowledge on effective prevention programmes, identify gaps and ways of addressing them. The focus will be on programming and implementation.

Research shows that worldwide, young women between the ages of 15 to 25 are 1.5 times likely to acquire HIV than young men. Women vulnerability remains strikingly evident. A focused strategy is needed to address these challenges given that South Africa is drafting a new National Strategic Plan to deal with the epidemic.

The outcomes of the summit will help in setting the agenda for research as well as contribute in the National Strategic Plan for HIV and AIDS (NSP) 2011-2014.
