Minister Dipuo Peters conduct sod turning ceremony for Qunu Integrated Energy Centre (IEC)

The Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters invite members of the media to
Sod turning ceremony in Qunu, Eastern Cape Province for the establishment of an Integrated Energy Centre (IEC).

This event will be held in Qunu, Umtata at 10h00 on Saturday, 27 February 2010, as part of the contribution of the Department of Energy to celebrate 20th anniversary celebration of the release of former President, Dr RN Mandela, from prison.

This project is being implemented in partnership with Sasol Oil Limited, the OR Tambo District and the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipalities.

The Department of Energy (DoE) in collaboration with oil companies, local municipalities and other development agencies have since 2002 been establishing the Integrated Energy Centres (IECs) around the country as part of implementation of government mandate to promote access to clean, affordable energy services.

The vision of the ministry towards this end is that the setting up of the IECs will contribute towards job creation and community development, recognition that the provision of energy alone would not sustain communities but that energy provision has to be linked to other needs such as water, sanitation, health, education, and local economic development.

Invitations have been extended to Mandela’s family and Abathembu Kingdom. Amongst other dignitaries who confirmed are Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Ms Elizabeth Thabethe (Chairperson of Portfolio Committee), Eastern Cape Cabinet, members of parliament and other corporate sector.
