Minister Davies to donate blankets and food parcels to displaced Masiphumelele residents

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies will visit Masiphumelele Township, outside Fish Hoek, Cape Town on Tuesday, 4 January 2011, where he will donate food parcels and blankets to the members of the Masiphumelele community whose shacks were destroyed by fire last week.

More than 160 homes were gutted on Sunday and Tuesday and more than 600 people are reported to have been left destitute. The displaced people have been accommodated at the Masiphumele Community Hall.

It will Minister Davies’s second visit to Masiphumelele in as many months. In November he addressed more than 250 business people and aspirant entrepreneurs as part of the “Taking the dti to the People” campaign. He spoke about financial and non-financial assistance that the department offers to entrepreneurs in an effort to create employment opportunities and fighting off poverty.
