Minister of Correctional Services, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, to officiate the National e-Literacy Graduation Ceremony for offenders

The Minister of Correctional Services, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa–Nqakula will officiate the National e–Literacy graduation ceremony for male, female and youth offenders who are aged between 14 to 35 years old. 

During 2009/10 financial year the Department of Correctional Services entered into a strategic partnership with the Department of Communications through the Presidential National Commission to render an e–Literacy Programme to incarcerated offenders. The aim of the programme is to develop, empower and equip offenders with Information Communication Technology skills that will enable them to contribute positively when they are reintegrated back into society. The programme targets Youth, Female and Male offenders.

Towards the end of last year over 317 offenders attended intensive training and the last phase of the e–Literacy Programme was concluded in January 2011. Offenders have now achieved a qualification in International Computer Driver’s Licence (ICDL).

The certificate graduation ceremony will also be attended by the Executive Management Team from Correctional Services, officials from the Department of Communications, families of the offenders and representatives from various tertiary institutions. Media will be afforded an opportunity to take photos and interview the offenders in company of their family members.
