During her maiden Budget Vote speech as Minister of Correctional Services in 2009, the Hon. Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, MP announced a review of the Medical Parole regulatory framework under section 79 of the Correctional Services Act. of 1998.
The review of the Medical Parole policy resulted in the development of a new Medical Parole policy under the Correctional Matters Amendment Act of 2011, which was signed into law by President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma in May of last year.
While the revamped Medical Parole policy allows for a greater scope of seriously ill offenders to be eligible for consideration for placement on Medical Parole, the granting of Medical Parole will now also have to withstand greater scrutiny.
All applications for consideration for placement on Medical Parole will require the approval of the newly-appointed Medical Parole Advisory Board currently consisting of nine medical doctors.
The Minister of Correctional Services, Hon. Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, MP, will tomorrow meet and welcome the new Medical Parole Advisory Board and invites all members of the media to be part of this occasion.
