The Minister of Communications hosts roundtable discussions with information and communications technology small, medium and micro enterprises

The Minister of Communications, Mr Radhakrishna Padayachie (Roy), will be hosting a roundtable discussion with the second and third tier information and communications technology (ICT) companies in South Africa.

This meeting follows the recently held summit with the Top 30 ICT companies in South Africa and is in line with the Minister’s commitment made in the media briefing on the 11 November 2010 to engage with various sectors in the ICT Industry.

The purpose of this roundtable discussion is to develop an integrated strategy to forge government-industry partnerships in the creation of jobs. It is a direct response to President Zuma’s call to mobilise all sectors of society into the national efforts to create more jobs.

In a recent compact signed with the Top 30 companies a commitment was made to strive to create one million jobs by 2020 and to improve the competitiveness within the ICT sector by building a globally excellent industry. A commitment was made to achieve a 100% internet and broadband coverage in South Africa by 2020.

This initiative forms part of the overall efforts to mobilise the private sector, academia, civil society organisations and labour.

To date about 150 business organisations have committed to attend and the focus will be on the identification of opportunities in the ICT sector and to forge a closer working relationship with government.
