Robin Carlisle, the Minister for Transport and Public Works in the Western Cape and Vernon Billet, the Chairman of the Western Cape Chapter of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), amongst other Santaco leaders, will on Thursday take advantage of the National Vehicle Testing Association’s (NVTA’s) Free Safety Checks for the Festive Season.
While the ministerial car and a Santaco taxi are being inspected, the Minister and Chairperson will reflect on the state of the taxi industry over the past year, as well as the relationship between the Western Cape Government and Santaco.
Member Vehicle Testing Stations of the NVTA, which is affiliated to the Retail Motor Industry (RMI), are offering the free tests, which began on Monday 28 November, and are available to the public until Saturday 10 December 2012.
The NVTA says it is estimated that close to 10% of fatal crashes occur directly as a result of vehicle factors, while vehicle factors are a contributory factor in around 13%. Of these, 36% are believed to be due to impaired and smooth tyres, 25% as the result of faulty brakes, 25% due to defective steering and 15% to additional vehicle factors.
Members of the media are invited to attend.
