The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof Blade Nzimande, will update Parliament on the outcomes of the inaugural edition of National Science Month, and provide further updates on key public-sector developments in science, technology and innovation.
On 4 July 2026, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, formally launched the inaugural edition of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s National Science Month initiative.
Building on National Science Week, which has been hosted annually since 2000, the launch of National Science Month marks a significant milestone in strengthening public engagement with science, technology and innovation (ST&I).
National Science Month engages learners and all sectors of society in a comprehensive national programme science engagement programme that includes exhibitions, science talks and technology demonstrations that are aimed encouraging young people to take up careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
It also gives the DSTI an important platform to improve public awareness of the high-impact research and technologies developed by South Africa’s public science institutions such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the National Research Foundation (NRF), the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and others.
