Minister Ben Martins to address second African Association of Public Transport congress

Transport Minister, Honourable Dikobe Ben Martins will deliver a keynote address at the 2nd Congress of the African Association of Public Transport (UATP) as part of the department’s annual October Transport Month (OTM) Campaign under the theme “Working together to provide a safe and reliable transport system”

The 1st Congress of the Association was held in Dakar, Senegal, in 2010.

In line with the theme for the 2012 OTM campaign, the Congress will deliberate, among others on:

  • bringing together all factors of urban, suburban, regional and inter-regional public transport of passengers and goods on the African continent;
  • promoting the constant improvement of mobility of people and goods in Africa;
  • strengthening the voice of the African sector and overall transport platforms in the world.

The need exists to limit the use of private cars by developing and implementing effective and attractive public transport systems.

This Congress enables the whole world of public transport to gather in Johannesburg to discuss a sustainable solution for mobility in Africa and the developing world.

‘The Congress will demonstrate the effectiveness of BRT as an adapted and sustainable solution for mobility in African cities. It will demonstrate the importance of, and need for the planning, regulating, control and organisation of public transport markets and illustrate the contribution of public transport to the development of societies
