Memorial Service for the late Gauteng MPL Kenneth Batyi

Members of the media are invited to the memorial service of the late Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Hon. Kenneth Zimoshile Batyi. The memorial service will be held at the Metropolitan Civic Centre in Braamfontein on Thursday 1st December at 10h00.

Hon. Batyi passed on last Sunday at the Milpark Hospital after he was admitted to the hospital last week.

In 1999, Hon. Batyi became a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and was deployed to the Social Development, the Health and the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Committees.

Following the 2004 elections, he was seconded to the Department of Social Development as Deputy Director, on a seven-month assignment.

He returned to the Legislature in December 2004, and was deployed to serve in the Agriculture, Environment and Conservation, the Gender, Youth and People with Disabilities (GEYODI) committees and the Public Accounts Committee (SCOPA).

In May 2009 he was appointed to the position of the Whip of ANC Constituency.

Described by fellow MPLs as a humble person with a great sense of humour, Hon Batyi rose from his humble beginnings and became a leader of the Daveyton Civic Association, going on to become Deputy Chairperson of the township’s arm of the South African National Civic Association (SANCO), until 1998. In 1995, he was elected as the Chairperson of the ANC Daveyton and Benoni branches.

Hon. Batyi will be laid to rest in Engcobo, in the Eastern Cape on Saturday, the 10th December 2011.
