Memorial and funeral service of the late Brigadier General Sidwell Buyisile Baartman

The Chief of the South African National Defence Force, General Solly Shoke, wishes to announce the memorial service and funeral arrangements of the late Brigadier General (Bri Gen) Sidwell Buyisile Baartman (52).

The memorial service will be held at Thaba Tshwane City Hall on Wednesday 15 June 2011 at 12h00. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, 18 June 2011, 08h00, at Thaba Tshwane City Hall, he will then be laid to rest with full military honours at Thaba Tshwane Cemetery.

Brig Gen Baartman and Colonel (Col) Gangumzi Nhose were involved in a car accident on 10 June 2011, four kilometres from Middelburg on the Hendrina road. Brig Gen Baartman died on the scene and Col Nhose was taken to the Middelburg hospital (Midmed).

The deceased was born in Worcester, Western Cape on 8 August 1958 and left the country to join Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) in Swaziland in 1975. Brigadier General Baartman received a military training in Russia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe where he also served in several posts in the MK structures. In the early 1990s, he was staying in the United Kingdom and he returned to South Africa in 1996 where he was integrated into the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) as a Colonel.

He served at Defence Headquarters in the procurement section and was appointed as the military attaché to the Republic of Angola in 2004. He returned to South Africa in 2007 was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and served at the Works Regiment. In January 2010, he was appointed as the Director Infantry Force Preparation where he was responsible for the preparation of the infantry forces for external and internal deployment.

He was married to Nozipho Baartman and is survived by three children, Ntokozo, Mduduzi and Ayanda.

Col Gangumzi Nhose has since been transferred to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria, where he is placed under Intensive Care Unit and he is in a serious but stable condition.
