Members of Parliament's meet ex-mine workers in Mthatha

Parliament’s Portfolio Committees on Labour and Mineral Resources will tomorrow, 6 May 2011, visit Mthatha in the Eastern Cape to meet the ex-mine workers.

This visit comes after complaints by the ex-mine workers to the Committees about delays in paying them out their employment benefits. They have alerted the Committees that since their meeting with the Committees last year little has been done to address their problems.

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources Mr Fred Gona said the ex-mine workers indicated that some individuals have received their money and others are still waiting.

Mr Gona also said they will get a report back from the Intergovernmental Task Team that was setup to deal with the matter. “The task team will account on what they are doing, what they have done and what mechanisms are in place to address this issue.”

The meeting will also afford the Committees an opportunity to identify bottlenecks in the process, and this will assist the Committees to come up with a resolution and a way forward.

Details of the meeting:
Date: 6 May 2011
Time: 09h00 to 17h00
Venue: Garden Court, Mthatha
