Various Parliamentary Committees will next week undertake oversight visits to different entities and projects including South African Broadcasting Corporation, OR Tambo International Airport and housing schemes.
The Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements will from October 5 to 9 visit Eastern Cape housing projects to find out more about the implementation of government’s programme on human settlements. During the same period, the Portfolio Committees on Tourism and Home Affairs will, together, visit ports of entry in Limpopo (Beitbridge), Free State (Maseru, Ficksburg and Fouriesburg) as well as OR Tambo International Airport to assess readiness for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Then on October 6 to 8, the Portfolio Committee on Communication will visit, among others, the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Independent Communications Authority of South Africa and Sentech. The purpose of the visit includes getting an update on the financial controls at SABC, getting to know about the role of different divisions at the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa and finding out more about the technical dimensions of signal distribution.
Committees are the engine rooms of Parliament’s oversight and legislative work, and the visits are in line with Parliament’s decision to have committees spending more of their time on oversight during the fourth Parliament. Committees will spend 60 percent of their time on oversight and 40 percent on legislation.
