Media tour to Dysselsdorp Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP) site in the Western Cape

The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform will embark on a media tour to Dysselsdorp CRDP site on 13 February 2012. The Dysselsdorp visit will include engagement with beneficiaries on their experiences and development achievements, inspecting the status of projects currently being undertaken as part of the CRDP. The provincial government has identified Dysselsdorp as the CRDP site in the Western Cape.

The tour will begin at 09h00 in the morning in Dysselsdorp were journalists will be transported to projects. The projects are not far from each other. They will be able to inter-act with beneficiaries and other stakeholders. Lunch will also be provided.  Those having their own transport are at the liberty to use it.

Through the Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP) the Department wants to improve the livelihoods of rural communities ultimately creating vibrant, equitable and sustainable rural communities. This includes: redistributing 30% of the country’s agricultural land; improving food security of the rural poor; creating business opportunities, de-congesting and rehabilitating over-crowded former homeland areas; and expanding opportunities for women, youth, people with disabilities and older persons who stay in rural areas.

The ultimate vision of creating vibrant, equitable and sustainable rural communities will be achieved through a three-pronged strategy based on:

  • a coordinated and integrated broad-based agrarian transformation;
  • strategically increasing rural development; and
  • an improved land reform programme.

The fight against poverty still remains the cornerstone of government’s focus and furthermore, a new economic and developmental trajectory is required for the country to address food insecurity and  general poverty in the country, particularly, in the rural areas.
