Media statement on winter school classes for grade 12 learners

The Free State Department of Education will conduct grade 12 winter school classes from Monday, June 25 to Friday, July 13 2012.

This is to improve the 2012 Grade 12 National Senior Certificate results.

In his 2012/13 budget speech, Free State MEC Tate Makgoe committed to improve the provincial matric results from 75.7% to 80% this year.

These winter classes will take place at about 43 centres across the province. About 13 317 matriculants drawn from 107 township and rural schools are set to benefit from this initiative.

Arrangement for accommodation, transport and catering has been made for learners who are staying far from these centres.

The winter classes are for learners studying English First Additional Language, Mathematics, Mathematics Literacy, Life Sciences, Physical Science, Accounting, Economics and Geography.

Physical Science, Mathematics and Accounting are considered as ‘killer’s subjects.

In 2011 it was observed that matrics did not perform well in these subjects.

Makgoe appeals to learners to use this opportunity and attend winter classes.

He also urges parents to offer necessary support to learners as they prepare for their final exanimation which start on 22 October until 30 November 2012.

To strengthen and complement the winter school programme efforts to improve results, educators will be trained on Curriculum and Assessment Statement Policy (CAPS).

The training will commence on June 25 till June 29.
