Finance Deputy Minister Mr Nhlanhla Nene, MP will hold a public meeting in Cape Town about the Special Pensions Act. This follows the latest amendment to the Special Pensions Act.
Amendments to the Act were passed in 1998, 2003 and 2005. The latest amendment, passed in 2008 extends the pension to include people who were 30 but not yet 35 years old on 1 December 1996. Benefits are extended to orphans and spouses of those who qualify as a result of this amendment.
South Africans voted in the fourth national democratic elections this year, a privilege brought about by sacrifices made by many citizens who fought for the non-racial and democratic state enjoyed today. Many of those who were in the struggle for democracy could not provide for a pension and the Special Pensions Act was promulgated in 1996.
