The Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters will join the nation in honouring the call by our President, Mr Jacob Zuma, that all South Africans should dedicate 67 minutes of their time to make a positive contribution to society in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day.

In his State of the Nation Address on 3 June 2009, President Jacob Zuma said: "An international campaign has been initiated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and related organisations, called Mandela Day, which sums up what Tata stands for."

Cabinet, on 1 July 2009, endorsed the call to declare 18 July as Mandela Day globally. Cabinet called on all South Africans, civil society organisations and the citizens of the world to support the Mandela Day initiative by doing 'good' in their communities.

In celebration of Mandela Day, the Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters will be part of painting of six houses and installation of CFL's at Noupoort on Saturday, 18 July 2009, "this initiative for me contributes greatly to our ongoing programme of social cohesion and re-building the moral fabric of our society, and the fact that it is based on the legacy of the greatest icon of our time, our own Tata Mandela has special significance for me. No one the world over will disagree that we all should strive to emulate the selfless and voluntary nature of Madiba. Tata remains my own inspiration, and to be like him is what I personally strive for!"
