The Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana, will launch Women’s Month on Wednesday, 1 August 2012.
The month of August was declared Women’s Month by the democratically-elected government of South Africa as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched on the 9th of August 1956 against the Pass Laws. It is also a platform to focus the attention of the nation on issues of women empowerment and gender equality.
Minister Xingwana will give details of the events and activities that will take place across the country to mark Women’s Month. She will also brief the media about the programme of Women’s Day (9th of August) to commemorate the historic march by South African women. This year marks the 56th Anniversary of the 1956 march.
