The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in partnership with the provincial Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and Total South Africa invites members of the media to the launch of the National Arbor Week campaign to be held at Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley on Saturday, 1 September 2012.
The National Arbor Week campaign is celebrated annually from 1 to 7 September and the theme for this year’s campaign is “Our Forests – Our Future”. The launch will see Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson, physically establishing 200 food gardens and distributing vegetable and seed packs. The Minister will also partake in the planting of over 1 000 indigenous and fruit trees in Platfontein, outside Kimberley.
In addition, about 20 trees will be planted at Galeshewe Stadium, where a plaque will be unveiled to honour all the people that contributed towards liberation, community upliftment and nation building in the Northern Cape.
Another highlight of the day will be the awarding of prizes to winners of the annual Arbor City Awards by the Minister. This competition is aimed at promoting the greening of cities and towns in South Africa. The launch also forms part of a build-up towards the World Forestry Congress that will be hosted by South Africa in 2015.
