The MEC of Local Government and Housing, Mr Soviet Lekganyane cordially invites all media houses to attend a Free Basic Services campaign.
The MEC will be providing households with free basic services tokens aims at contributing towards raising the standards of living and to help impoverished households to have access to electricity and water.
Through this programme, the government provides 50 kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity to poor households per month. The government has developed a way of offering poor households a basic level of service.
Accordingly, all local municipalities within the province have adopted indigent policies and indigent registers through which indigents families get assistance.
Part of the day's activities will be an electricity switch-on ceremony on a completed electricity project.
The purpose of campaign is to create awareness on government interventions to alleviate poverty through initiatives such as the Free Basic Electricity (FBE) programme.
"We have provided Free Basic Water service to 701 191 homes, whilst 263 889 families benefited from the Free Basic Electricity programme. In this financial year, 2010/11, we will supply 747 371 homes with free basic water and 301 020 with free basic electricity."
