Three hundred bicycles will be handed over to the eThekwini Municipality by the Global Environment Facility on 6 December. The Mayor of eThekwini, Councillor James Nxumalo will receive the bicycles tomorrow following a relay cycling event.
The 300 bicycles form part of the low-carbon public transport component of the Government of South Africa and Global Environment Fund (GEF)/ United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO’s) project on Greening the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17). The two government department’s involved in this project are the Department of Environmental Affairs and Department of Transport.
The project is also in collaboration with the eThekwini Municipality. The GEF has provided bicycles to COP17 delegates and personnel. KfW Development Bank of Germany has provided funding for the development of related non-motorised transport infrastructure.
The event will also mark the inauguration of the eThekwini Non-Motorised Transportation Plan.
The national Minister of Transport, Mr Sbu Ndebele will be in attendance as well as the Mayor of eThekwini, Councillor James Nxumalo, the Director – General of UNIDO, Mr Kandeh Yumkella the German Ambassador, Dr Horst Freitag as well as the Chief Executive Officer of GEF, Ms Monique Barbut.
