Western Cape Agriculture briefs media on food security projects, 12 Oct

Water-wise food security projects to be launched this World Food Day

 Water-wise vegetable gardens are boosting food security in the Western Cape.

This will be the focus of the Western Cape Government’s official programme for World Food Day, which is celebrated globally on 16 October.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations cites climate change as one of the biggest challenges to ending hunger across the world.

The Western Cape Department of Agriculture will be hosting its annual World Food Day programme in Villiersdorp this year.

Ten food security projects have been established in the area. The programme will include visits to these initiatives.

Projects include:

  • Three community gardens have been upgraded in Lebanon, Klein Begin and Nuweberg;
  • Two school gardens in Viliiersdorp have been established;
  • 50 families will benefit from household gardens;
  • 160 residents received training in vegetable gardening, focusing on water-wise practices.

One of the major projects is a pipeline that has been laid to connect bore-holes at the sports ground to the community and school gardens. This means that no municipal water will be used. All the household gardens will also be using grey water.
