Public Works briefs media on Anti- Fraud Awareness campaign, 18 Aug

Public Works takes a stand against fraudsters defrauding unsuspecting suppliers

Public Works Director General Mziwonke Dlabantu, cordially invites you to a Media Briefing session on the Anti- Fraud Awareness campaign to be held at Head Office of the National Department of Public Works (DPW) on Tuesday, 18 August 2015 at 09h00.

The Department of Public Works is launching a public awareness campaign to warn businesses about a wave of scams waged by fraudsters using bogus DPW documents to order expensive goods from unsuspecting suppliers - and then vanish without paying. To date, more than 20 companies have fallen prey to the scams and lost more than R26 million worth of goods. Police are investigating most of these cases.

So far, the biggest losses were incurred by a computer company that delivered R18 million of worth of laptops to a fictitious DPW address in Mpumalanga. It never received any payment for the goods.

The fraudulent campaign is being perpetrated by a syndicate of sophisticated fraudsters who place orders using fake DPW documents. Most syndicates operate in North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces.
