The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Honourable Gugile Nkwinti, cordially invites members of the media to a media briefing session that will take place at the Imbizo Centre in Parliament at 13h00, 31 May 2013.
The Budget Vote comes on the eve of the centenary of the notorious 1913 Natives’ Land Act, a discriminatory piece of legislation through which the majority of black South Africans were dispossessed of their land rights. As we mark this sad chapter in our history, the centenary provides the country with an opportunity to reflect on the negative effects that this legislation has had, and continues to have on our people.
The occasion also presents us with an opportunity to communicate the decisive and progressive strides that our government has made, and continues to make, in reversing the legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act. To this end, the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) has embarked on Project 2013, the theme of which is “Reversing the Legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act.”
The Minister in his budget vote speech will share amongst others, information on the following work of the department:
- Progress that has been made through the rural development and land reform programme.
- The re-opening of lodgement of Land claims
- Land Audit
